Optimized localization for gravitational waves from merging binaries

ABSTRACT The Advanced LIGO and Virgo gravitational-wave observatories have opened a new window with which to study the inspiral mergers of binary compact objects. These observations are most powerful when coordinated multimessenger observations. This was underlined by first observation neutron star merger GW170817, coincident short gamma-ray burst, GRB170817A, identification host galaxy NGC 4993 from optical counterpart AT2017gfo. Finding fast-fading critically depends on rapid production sky map based LIGO/Virgo data. Currently, initial is produced, followed more accurate, high-latency, ${\gtrsim}{12}\, {\rm h}$ map. We optimization choices Bayesian prior signal model, can be used alongside other approaches such as reduced order quadrature. find these yield up $60{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ reduction in time required produce high-latency localization for mergers.
